Isla Gomez

Isla Gomez- Isla Pareda

It supposed to be a short trip to Isla Gomez so we started the day with a short walk with Mike and Miela off of At Last ( lagoon 44)
It is hot and a little drier than Costa Rica the beach as full of Conch Shells and looked a little like the set on Survivor.
We had engine troubles about half way across. Lucky we had the sails up and were motor sailing with a small jeniker. We cruised about 3.5 knots while Michel and Chantal worked on the hot engine. The impeller was thought to be the problem because a new one was installed the day prior. The problem was the sea strainer intake had lost its seal and water was not getting sucked in.
Apparently this has been a problem for a while and the engine was running hot.
Michel made a gasket and we made it to the Islets just before sunset.
What a stunning place. About a dozen little islands all grouped together surround by jagged pinnacles. As we approached the group the depth of the water came up drastically from 600 to 35 feet. In the shallows the waves began to build it was interesting to watch. We were joined by bottle nose dolphins as we approached the anchorage. Our spirits lifted as we had finally found the anchorage we had dreamed about before leaving Canada…AT LAST!
We were happy to see lots of little coves to anchor in and a group of sailboats all all grouped together. We arrived at happy hour on board Alex and Carols Nepenthe and met a great group of friends.
